MARCI KENON

PLAN Founder

Marci Kenon, the founder of Preventive Lifestyle Assistance Network (PLAN), recalls first hearing the term pre-diabetic when a doctor diagnosed her in 2012-- the same year she became an IFPA-certified personal fitness trainer working briefly at Gold’s Gym in Las Vegas. Dr. Brown shared an urgency about the diagnosis because both her mother and grandmother suffered from type 2 diabetes, and both became double amputees who died from complications related to the disease.  It was a harrowing story and wake-up call Marci never forgot. She took action by joining a diabetes management course held at a local library.

Marci moved back to New York City, her hometown in 2013. The fitness enthusiast turned professional trainer has been training clients in Harlem where she grew up. She developed a hybrid-style of training that included online interaction between training sessions to give support and accountability to the clients needed to reach their goals. That often meant changing their eating habits, getting proper rest, drinking adequate amounts of water, and exercising on other days through online video workouts she customized for them. It made quite a difference in their results. Marci realized the importance of incorporating technology into her fitness training and lifestyle coaching practice.

She and her team have incorporated those same elements in the delivery of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), both face-to-face and online.

PLAN launches DPP in Harlem at the Ephesus SDA Church where Marci is a member.  "This area is ripe with all types of chronic conditions,” she says. “ I am excited to be a part of a proven solution to give participants the tools they need to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes long after our year together ends.”

Marci is equally excited to offer the program online for those who need the flexibility it affords. “It’s simply not an option for people to show up at a location every week for a host of reasons,” she says. “And D.C. might be quite a commute! So we can work with people around the country online for now. It is our goal to deliver DPP in partnership with 300 churches around the country within six years.”

Marci Kenon graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with a B.A. in Print Journalism and International Relations. She is a published writer and documentary film producer. As a contributor to Billboard and other national publications, she interviewed Diana Ross, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Boyd II Men, Common, Boy George, Nelly, Mona Scott, and Daymond John, to name a few.

In the production of the documentary “Higher Ground: Voices of Contemporary Gospel Music”, she interviewed Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Edwin Hawkins, Yolanda Adams, Deitrick Haddon, and many others.

Marci holds IFPA specialist certifications in Women’s Fitness, Sports Nutrition, Special Populations, and Exercise Endocrinology. She is a DPP-certified Lifestyle Coach and an Institute of Wellness Education (IWE), -certified Wellness Coach.

Marci is a board member of The Eight, a health and wellness non-profit. She is a 1983 alumni class officer at the Dalton School.
